The first days and weeks of the school year are so important in setting the tone with your students and giving them an idea of what to expect in your class! At IDE Corp., we suggest doing a Priming Plan at the start of the school year. This is a short unit or series of activities that accomplishes 3 goals:
Have students build familiarity with all of the structures and routines you will use to give them more responsibility for their learning.
Build in them a sense that they can succeed at high levels (build their growth mindset!).
Gather some assessment data regarding both academics and social interaction to make future instructional decisions.
During the months of September and October, Pre-K students will have intentional opportunities to engage in these three Conscious Control Executive Function skills:
Shifting focus from one event to another
Attending to a person or activity
Thinking before acting

Priming Plan Task- This Priming Plan is meant to last no more than two weeks. Start with sharing the task to your students as a Whole Group within the first week of school. This could be the third day of school, Thursday, Sept. 4th so it overall ends Sept. 18th. Introduce the task and revisit it with students Tues. Sept 9th, Fri. Sept. 12th, and sometime the week of Sept. 15th before the project wraps up.

Priming Plan Student Checklist- Make a copy for each student and periodically create check points for students to color in the emoji once they've completed that portion connected to their book. Remember this can be done with students in smaller groups, one-to-one, or by tables. This is a discussion point as you want students to know why they are coloring in the smiley and being able to recognize they have completed that portion. This is your Facilitation Grid. This is where you can use the key provided at the top left corner to capture data of the EF Conscious Control skills students are engaging with during the Priming Plan. The far left column has a comments section where you can capture anecdotals on students. As a reminder, use this after conferencing and observing a small amount of students, then capture their progress with the key. Have your TAs also use it so that you are capturing all the students.
Ex: Monday, I focus on 4 students while TAs may do 2 students each for the day (Lets say 8 students in total). Then Wednesday I do another group. By Friday, I should have captured everyone across more than one skill of evidence. Next week we switch students.
Second tab at the bottom of the grid contains the complete 9 Executive Function Conscious Control skills that can be used to capture additional evidence throughout the year.
